Badacsonyi Wine District

Our 14-hectare vineyard is located near three villages: the Syrah is on Badacsonylábdihegy, the Kéknyelű and Vulcanus are on the slopes of Mount Badacsony, and our Pinot Noir vineyard is located in Kővágóőrs, on the Küszöb-orra mountain, at an altitude of 240-260 metres above sea level. All three locations are part of the Badacsony wine district, and thus, part of the Balaton wine region.

The differences between the three locations are reflected not only in the grape varieties but also in the soil itself.

The largest portion of our vineyards, planted with Pinot Noir, is located on a subsoil of red sandstone, which has excellent water retention capabilities and is occasionally mixed with clay. Due to its size and position, parts of the vineyard also feature brown forest soil just beneath the surface. This red sandstone has always been a dominant rock type in the area: if you look closely, you will notice that many of the houses in the nearby villages are built with this unique stone as their foundation.

Our other blue grape, Syrah, planted alongside Viognier, is situated on a much lighter, looser, sandy-limestone soil in comparison.

As for our white varieties, the indigenous Kéknyelű and Vulcanus, they are planted in the most „Badacsony-like” soil imaginable: on the slopes of the mountain, the dense, rigid basalt gives the wines made from these grapes a completely unique, mineral, and salty character.

Ecological cultivation

Most of our vineyards were planted in the mid-1990s, and since they have been under our care, we have been cultivating everything organically. In this respect, we have it especially easy on Küszöb-orra, which is a nature reserve surrounded by forest — here, we are completely alone, with no neighbours.

We prune using the single vine method (Guyot) and the cordon method (Royat Cordon), taking into account the principles of gentle pruning. We also make sure that, even at this stage, in order to preserve the concentration of the wines, we limit the future yield as much as possible. The 1.8-2 kg vine load is determined during the shoot selection, as we believe this is essential to ensure that our wines are bottled in a quality that aligns with our vision.
